Tonight Billy and I watched a Primetime special about two teens who chose adoption for their baby girls. They were from the Gladney Center for Adoptions in Fort Worth. It was really an amazing segment. We had to over look wording like "giving up their babies", but other than that it was really well done. Here is the link http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=3394560
The most important piece of the segment to me was that in both cases the girls parents were still married and very supportive of her decision to parent or make an adoption plan. Often times people think "where are the parents?" as though women are left alone in their decision-making. When in reality they often times do have support but still feel that adoption is in the long-term best interest of their precious child whom they love more than anything in the world. Sometimes we forget it is a loss to their parents too as they say goodbye to their grandchild.
The reporter asked one of the girls mom why she didn't say that she would raise the baby herself and she said "This isn't my baby to raise." What a powerful statement. Thank you, ABC for showcasing adoption in such a positive light. They validated the choice to place a baby for adoption and they validated our family as well. For without adoption-minded women out there, we wouldn't have our baby girl.
We thank God every day for Vivi's birthmother, who first and foremost chose not to abort the life growing inside her. And secondly for choosing a better life than she could provide for her baby. For as much as the temptation exists today to go to a clinic and "fix" the "problem"...she rose above that and gave a home to our daughter for 40 weeks and 4 days until she could come into this world, bound for our family. She will always be to me, Vivianna's hero.

that's beautiful.
I wish that I could find that special on youtube or on ABC's website. It would be great to see the whole thing and not just 6+ minutes of it. Grrr.
